For those of you who may have forgotten or are just tuning in, allow me to reiterate:

In light of Peter Jackson's newest addition to the Lord of the Rings
movie series (The Unexpected Journey) - here at Authors-Club we hosted...

An Unexpected Contest

In our literature/fan-fiction contest we challenged participants to perform one, simple task:

Write your own tale of Middle Earth, whether it's a fan-fiction, a tale of your own original character based in Tolkien's universe, or a poetic, chant of the Elves and their prophecies.

After several days of arduous judging and constant :note:ing between our lovely judges:

:iconofonesoul:, :iconamour-raven:, & :iconkathraw:

- we finally have our winners! And I know what you're all thinking...

WELL, JUST GET OVER IT... CUZ THERE WERE SEVERAL REALLY GOOD ENTRIES
AND IT WAS REALLY HARD TO PICK WINNERS, OKAY!?

:icondeathglareplz:

But let's cut to the chase...

Who are the winners of our Unexpected Contest? :iconawkwardplz:

Drum-roll, please?

:icondrum-rollplz:

The winners of our Unexpected Contest are...

First Place goes to -

PhillipTobias for their piece:

HEART-AND-DAGGERRozoth sniffed the air, picking up natural scents through the forest canopy. Below him were the rotten smells of the other orcs. The stench bored Rozoth, who had learned every scent of each orc in the hunting party. He preferred to take watch at night when all was quiet and he could pick up the sweet softness of the land. A flock of birds glided overhead and ignored Rozoth sitting at the highest branches. There had not been detection of any kind for several hours so Rozoth felt it was necessary to grab whatever food was left in the spoil bags. He took one last look, scanning the trees left to right and crawled spiderlike and quick to the earth below.
The Uruk-hai leader, Grikel, sat by the campfire still picking human remains from his blade. Rozoth nodded to him and sat next to the flame, opening up a bag with molded bread. It was not much but adequate to quench hunger. He would find something heartier and fresher before he went back up to the tree top.
“Nothing to report,”

OfOneSoul says:

We here at Authors-Club are proud to award First Place to PhillipTobias for their piece, HEART-AND-DAGGER. Not only did it exude exemplary story-telling but it boasted pure originality on a rather disused and often forgotten subject matter concerning the Tolkien universe. Orcs are sort of the underrated characters of Tolkien's novels - but this tale not only delves into their psyche and what drives them, but also a rather interesting game that keeps you guiltily entertained until the very end.

Third Place goes to -

DamonWakes for their piece:

The Fourth Ring-bearerThe goblin turned, eyes squinting into the gloom. He had heard a cough: he was sure of it. And yet, as the silent seconds trickled by, he began to think that it had perhaps only been a fish jumping in the pool. He stooped down with his bucket, but hesitated for a moment before bending over the water. Slowly, thoughtfully, he pushed his torch into the gravelly floor and took the long knife from his belt. There were stories about this place...lots of stories. Clutching the knife tightly, the goblin began to fill the bucket.
There was a hiss as the lit end of the torch flopped into the pool. Pale eyes and an outstretched hand lingered in the goblin’s vision, caught in the flame’s dying light.
“Who’s there!?” He whipped the blade out in front of him, slashing at the figure he had seen. “Who’s there!? I’ll stick you, I will!”
Forgetting both torch and bucket, the goblin pushed his back against the wall, inching back towards the tunnel he

amour-raven says:

I delved into this story like I do any other, but as I read I became aware of the wonderful imagery that the literature produces. I followed through until the very end - the majestic scenery and personification of the characters is marvelously flawless - and was sitting on the edge of my seat during the attempted kidnapping...as well as a majority of the text. The dialogue is imaginative and seemingly accurate. Kudos to you, my friend. This is a wonderful story and well-deserving of being amongst the top three winners.

Our Three Honorable Mentions go to
(in no particular order) -

Sir-Jayke for their piece:

The Goblin: An Unexpected JourneyIn the waning years of the Third Era, The War Of The Ring drew to a close. With the One Ring destroyed at the hands of Frodo Baggins, the lands of Mordor were emptied after the battle at the Black Gates, but something happened then, that no one intended. The battle was survived by the unlikeliest of creatures, a goblin, Garzaht of Mordor.
"Urgh, get off!" the scratchy voice said from beneath a heap of bloodied orc corpses. With a rustle one of the bodies was dislodged tumbling down the side of the pile and hitting the ground with a sloppy, bloody thud. A hand reached out from under the mass, pushing limbs aside and clutching onto whatever solid handhold it could. "Pathetic, fat, stupid, stinking, dead orcs!" the voice continued.
Getting a solid grip on the hilt of an orcish scimitar, blade dug into the ground, the hand pulled hard and with a loud slurp, the grimy form of a grimy goblin emerged from the pile. Getting to his feet with a clumsy stumble, the goblin spat on the pile of his

OfOneSoul says:

The Goblin: An Unexpected Journey by Sir-Jayke is probably the most humorous of all the submissions. Short and sweet - Sir-Jayke tells an interesting story that keeps you going until its rather abrupt, hilarious end. It has certainly deserved it's place amongst our Honorable Mentions.

LalaAdanwenB for their piece:

KathraW says:

This was such a touching and unique story. I couldn't help but to admire the feel this piece gives you with both the imaginative skill and the heartwarming dialogue.

Meeoko for their piece:

The Dwarf and The Ring WraithThe creature was late.
Checking the position of the sun in the sky, Pacsa heaved in a great lungfull of pipe weed through his pipe before looking back at the entrance to the village. Instead, the old dwarf let the gentle rays of the sun beat down upon his cheeks, savouring the silence, knowing that soon, everything would change. He had arrived in the sleepy little village not long ago and seeing the bustle of smiling townsfolk, Pacsa felt a momentary pang of guilt, knowing that very soon, their peaceful existence would be jarred completely. The dwarf took no comfort in the thought, but it couldn't be helped. Soon he would come.
Suddenly, he felt it.
The warmth in the air dipped startlingly fast, plunging several degrees and Pacsa felt the goosebumps rise on his skin. The summer air had turned to a wintery chill that rivalled the Misty Mountains surrounding Moria. That could mean only one thing; he was here.
Taking in a slow breath, Pacsa clamped his hands over his ears, ready. And then

amour-raven says:

Fear and uncertainty crept throughout me as I read the story, the haunting contingency remaining with me until the last word spoken. What a stunning and unexpected twist in the closing. The dialogue and imagery is flawless. Unique and exceptionally majestic, this story drags the reader in and keeps them pondering until the very end!

Congratulations to all the winners!

As I said before - there were several truly, amazing pieces that certainly deserve more attention. I would like to thank everyone who entered as well as thank amour-raven & KathraW for making it through this thing with me.

:thumb354381387: GollumThe dark waters lie silent. No wind to ripple the surface, no current moves the waters underneath. This is the end. No way leads out, not even for the waters.
This is how it has been for years uncounted. The darkness and the stillness of the forgotten places at the root of the world. The pale fishes swim, and eat, and die, and nothing ever happens.
Nothing, until the sound of naked feet breaks the silence, flapping on bare rock. Soft flesh against hard stone. The waters stir, and ripples run across the still waters, from the edge and to the walls of the cavern on the other side. There they stop, and cannot go further. A voice hisses, and then it too becomes part of the dark. Part of the shadows of the forgotten.
Time does not pass here – no sun or stars to count the hours and the days. Pale fish swim, and the cool waters never change, but for to softly part around the keel of a little boat, and the paddle-like feet that moves it. A hiss so soft that the silence is no longer distu
Against the WindA/N: This is a fan-fiction about Beorn from The Hobbit
The moon rose over the lonely crop of rock.  The Eagles used it by day as a common landing post, sharing hunting tips and important news of other creatures.  That day they had gone to nest after a long day of hunting, leaving the great black Bear to sit alone.  At night, it was his territory.  Not even the Eagles dared to rouse him from his pondering, and they willingly shared the space with him.  He sat, the moon the only witness to his lamenting.
He didn't like to linger on memories lost, and the Bear didn't remain on the Carrock for long.  Before the moon was in the middle of the sky he had climbed down to start foraging.
While the Bear was in the middle of an elderberry bush, enjoying a late dessert, his ears picked up.  As he moved to investigate the whimpering, he noticed the scent of Wargs and cursed himself for not noticing it sooner.  It could be a trap.  He honed

The Mirror Cracked'A blazing wave devours white shore,'
The poets muse on Feanor,
While they should wish him nothing more
Than swiftly falling ash.
In reckless words we forged our fate,
In white-hot script for cracking slate,
Each syllable the world's weight -
But gladly were we crushed.
I saw blood in the soft sea wrack;
Each sea-elf dead a mirror's crack
In our own faces staring back
From all the noble slain.
In Dior's blessed and empty face
I searched for us but found no trace.
The mirror shattered. Only grace
We bear no more stared back.
The waves closed over Elwing's head,
Dissolved the Light that silver bled
Into a face that held no dread;
So different from ourselves.
Not princes now, nor kings, but thieves,
And reckless as the falling leaves,
We take the Jewels and my heart grieves:
For all the world is stained.
For this the final Doom we bear:
In blood spilt red as Nelyo's hair;
The golden Vanyar lying there
Dead, even as our hearts.
The living Light is agony;
A shining, sharp finality:

OF THE UNTOLD FATE OF THE BLUE WIZARDSHere follows an account of the first two Maiar to be brought into service by the Valar to conquer Sauron, the Dark Enemy
From the beginning of time - even before the coming of the elves - Arda, a world of great beauty, was plagued by evil. Its beauty was its curse, for even as the Valar, the great nature spirits of Valinor, fashioned the many wondrous resources of that world, the evil, powerful and covetous Vala, Melkor did seek to destroy all that he could not own or control.  The nefarious designs of the Dark Enemy relentlessly plagued the whole of Arda and threatened its future, for he was more powerful than all the race of the Ainur.
The Valar, being witnesses to the vision of Ilúvatar, the Creator, perceived the ultimate destruction the dreadful mechanisms of Melkor would visit upon the world, especially Middle Earth. He and his dark puppet, the Maiar Sauron, would systematically poison that idyllic country. Evil fortune did indeed hold Middle Earth in bondage for many ages

The Begin of An Unexpected JourneyFire.
It blazed out of the once so beautiful kingdom of Erebor, with a thick dark cloud circling and adorning its mighty snow-covered peak almost like a crown. How ironic.
The city of Dale was destroyed. Houses had burned down to ground and the dead were beyond counting and salvage. The sickening smell of burning corpses wafted in nostrils of the dwarves of Erebor and the remaining villagers of Dale. Despite the horrible sight you could not turn your eyes away, because your feet were practically glued on the hill-sight.
Your home, the kingdom you were proud to serve, had been burn down and reduce to ashes. To nothing.
The realization dawned on you and you fell on your knees; dropping your belongings on the ground that you had managed to salvage in your haste. A hoarse cry tore itself from your throat. A cry of the damned and the sorrowful. A cry to match everyone's torn hearts.
The despair and fear you had felt came out at once as your tears left clean streaks in your soot and a
